A Book about Virtues Letter Friends has been a fun and captivating book for my four-year-old. Because she wants to read it over and over, she has started to use the "virtues" and their meanings in her everyday language. The darling kids and animal characters draw her in and she now has all of their names memorized. I think she identifies not only with the kids but also with the beautifully illustrated animals who have their personalities and show emotions. Each page opens up a conversation about life and emotions. When you read a page that says, "Kk--Kindness is being concerned about other people or Vv--Value is recognizing all people are equally important", and you ask your child, "What do you think?", you will find out how much four years understands and has already internalized the important virtues in life. As a parent and Pediatrician, I highly recommend this book!

Teaching virtues in a simple way is unique in itself, but the simplicity of defining a virtue along with the artistry of the illustrations is captivating! There are many teaching opportunities: learning the alphabet; naming animals with alliterative names i.e. Pearl the Peacock, Gus the Giraffe; counting flowers/insects found in each picture; and discovering the cleverly drawn Letter Friend. This book is a perfect nighttime/conversational book that promotes and reinforces good character and positive actions. I like reading a couple of pages a day to capture those "teachable moments".
